Votes! South Atlantic as the candidate who will protect reproductive freedom and advocate for accessible, affordable healthcare for ALL South Carolinians.

I am honored to have received the endorsement of Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic. I strongly believe that every person, in consultation with their licensed medical care professional, should have the freedom to make healthcare decisions that are most suitable for them and their family. These decisions should not be influenced by politicians, and I trust women and doctors to make the best choices without interference. 

As a wife, mother, educator, and breast cancer survivor, I recognize that access to affordable, high-quality healthcare is essential for strong families and flourishing communities. South Carolina must take greater steps to guarantee that ALL women have access to comprehensive healthcare services, including maternal healthcare (both pre and postnatal), reproductive healthcare, preventive care, and mental health services.

Healthcare disparities are growing, especially in rural areas like Clarendon County, leading to physician shortages, limited access to quality healthcare, and rising costs. As an elected official, I will push for expanding access to quality healthcare, improving maternal health outcomes, and supporting policies that respect individual freedoms while ensuring that every South Carolinian can receive care tailored to their needs.

“Every South Carolinian should have the freedom to control their own body, life, and future.

Dr. Michele Demery will fight back against our state’s dangerous ban on abortion care while

advocating for policies that will help our families and communities thrive. We are proud to

endorse Dr. Michele Demery as the candidate who will protect our right to make our own

decisions and keep the government out of our health care.”

Bans have eliminated all or most abortions in 17 states, including South Carolina. Since South

Carolina’s abortion ban went into effect in August 2023, thousands of women have been denied

essential health care in our home state. Most who need abortion care are forced to travel out of

state, seek abortion outside the health care system, or are forced to continue a pregnancy

against their will. South Carolina has the nation’s second highest rate of arrests and

prosecutions for women based on their pregnancy outcomes, including miscarriage. Meanwhile,

17 of SC’s 46 counties have no obstetrician/gynecologist to provide medical care for pregnant

women.

Numerous polls show that the American public, including South Carolinians, overwhelmingly

support access to legal abortion. Polling has shown that about 85% of those polled believe that

government should stay out of these personal, private decisions between patients and doctors.

Only 12% of residents believe abortion should be banned, yet 69% of sitting South Carolina

legislators voted for the current abortion ban in 2023.

South Carolina has the 8th highest maternal mortality rate in the nation. Black women here are

more than four times more likely to die than white women. Maternal and infant deaths have

increased since the abortion ban went into effect in 2023.
